The Pet
The sun offered the world a pet
The earth accepted:
'It'll take no looking after
'The food's growing on you
'It comes in its own cage -
'Self-sealed, two arms, two legs.'
The pet grew up
The master didn't like it, tried to tame it
With famine and plagues; earthquake and war
The pet became obstreperous, ravished the master
Sought a new master.
But it was dry, it would not feed it.
Now, the pet is travelling further afield and
When it finds a benevolent new master -
Will kill its old one
And start a new one.
